What a moving piece, Charlie. It really struck a chord for me, because I've been reflecting on the ways in which some of us experience unkind things at the hands of our parents, which might just be a reflection of the ways in which they are unkind to themselves..
I find it hard to find meaningful articulations of self-care that resonate (beyond the bath bombs and the eat something delicious, as you say). This was one of the most poignant I've read.
A vulnerable and moving share Charlie. I appreciate you expressing this tremendous tenderness as a father and especially the possibility of exporting that impulse of caring to one's self.
Great insights, Charlie. A female friend once told me pregnancy spurred a similar realization.
She said the desire and obligation she felt to be in the best shape possible came naturally. And that made her question why she hadn’t prioritized herself in the past.
Love this line from your piece:
“To care for oneself means to act as one’s own parent, with unconditional love.”
Wow! What a great reflection - and the essay took a left turn I hadn't expected, Charlie. My last week's essay was on that fine line between protect and prepare, so I read this with particular interest.
Charlie, you are also a son-in-law. I am proud to have you as a husband to my daughter, a father to my granddaughter, and I love you as a son.
Thank you--I love you too.
