Charlie, your authenticity and kindness has always been apparent to me and I suspect that your resonance with Anthony Bourdain was not so much about dreaming of what you could become but discovering what's already true of your character.
Tony had such a profound impact on me too. But you put it into better words than I ever could. He's the only celebrity death that has ever made my eyes leak.
The ideas of the search and of psychological richness via travel resonate so much with me. However I grew up not idolizing Anthony Bourdain but extreme athletes and adventurers. The surfers and rock climbers who circumnavigate the world, meeting interesting people and doing the one thing they are obsessed with.
The trade-offs in life keep me from fully committing to that kind of lifestyle. And I still struggle with deciding how much of what I desire can be found at home, if I focus my energy on the people and activities in my immediate vicinity.
I’m still not sure, but it does help to hear that other people have gone through similar things in their own life, thanks for sharing.
I loved reading this Charlie! When Bourdain passed away, I hadn’t really followed his work and hadn’t realized how many people felt so close to him. Your essay makes me appreciate the nuances of what he did, more than a chef, more than a tv host. I like the term psychological richness, I feel like that’s something I’ve been aware of existing in the pursuit of *something* in my life. The urge to occasionally be out of my comfort zone to really experience something. Great piece!
...big stan over here too man and largely for some of the same reasons...it is a dream and a goal of mine to meet that many people, see that many places, and to live that much experience...how rich we got to have him and how tragic to see him gone...

Bourdain was one of a kind. So are you. Still haven't found what I'm looking for. Keep searching Charlie.
Bourdain inspired so many people. Good to see he lives on through his fans.
