I didn't get to see the weekly format, but I will vote for keeping with the monthly format because I prefer to get fewer (but more impactful) things on my inbox.
Also, I must say: I'm a believer in NO TRADE-OFF. Just make your commitments be related to those weird things you wanna do. Life only gets better the closer you get to that ideal
Hi, I hope the surgery goes well and you get to make your dream videos. As someone who writes fiction and used to consume a lot of fiction as a coping tool and as a newbie to Substack, I find I come here to learn more nonfiction things like craft, personal narrative, skill development of some kind. I know there are agents and traditionally published authors here too, but I prefer to read my physical fiction books when I want to read fiction. My mental frame for Substack is nonfiction and journalism vs fiction. Perhaps that’s why there’s a discrepancy in your engagement? Also, thanks for the shoutout for the shoutout.
As one of those who have encouraged you to be speaking I'm really excited for your surgery. Though I realize the words "excited" and "surgery" don't belong in the same sentence, but you know what I mean. And then this "what is the tradeoff between constraints/commitments, and doing the weirdest thing that feels right?" interests me most of all of what you cover in this issue.
Best wishes for your surgery--it sounds epic!--and I hope is a complete success!
Sad over the loss of Milan Kundera so I’m having to reread Immortality and the Unbearable Lightness of Being.
I enjoy your articles.
